Grandma's Pies

Gene and Nicky were twins, who lived in New York City with their parents. Their grandparents lived about fifty miles away on a farm, and the two boys liked to go visiting. They loved the fresh country air and playing in the old apple orchard.

While they played, they would climb up and pick fresh, ripe apples for Grandma, which she would bake into the most delicious pies for supper. Gene and Nicky savored each sweet bite, and would eat until their stomachs were over stuffed with pie. Then they would make their Grandma promise they could have a piece for breakfast. And they always went home with a pie safely tucked away in the back seat of the car.

The years passed quickly, and visits to the farm became limited to holidays and special occasions. And even though Grandma's sight had grown dim, she still managed to bake those special apple pies for her grandsons.

Gene and Nicky went away to college, where each met a girl, got married, and had a set of twins. Gene and his family moved to Texas, while Nicky's family remained ln New York City,

One spring morning, Gene awoke to the taste of Grandma's apple pie. He had a strange feeling, so he called his brother in New York.

Before he could say anything, Nicky told him he had just come from the hospital, where their Grandmother had passed away an hour earlier.

"I know, Nicky," Gene answered quietly. "I woke up this morning with the taste of Grandma's pies in my mouth."

"Funny thing you should say that," Nicky laughed softly. "That was our last bit of conversation before she passed on; about how we both had loved her pies when we were kids. She told me she had baked one last pie for us before going into the hospital."

The years went by, and Nicky and his brother grew old. One night, Niciy awoke with an old, famillar flavor in his mouth, and knew Gene was now with Grandma, eating one of her apple ples.

Love is very strong, and even when someone very dear to us leaves, their love stays with us forever.
