Buckle-Up Buttercup

Everyone knows of the awesome powers of protection and love that angels possess. But sometimes you need an angel who does mundane, but important tasks.

I have been in a wheelchair all of my life. Through the years, I have learned to do many things that the doctors swore I would never be able to accomplish due to my multiple disabilities. But I grew up thinking that nothing was impossible, especially with Gracie, my guardian angel around.

I was alone one day, waiting for a friend to pick me up to go to lunch. As usual, he was late. Wanting to look especially nice, I had dressed with care that morning, even asking my mother to help me do up a new belt I had bought that looked great with my jeans. She was doubtful over my request, questioning how I would unfasten the belt buckle if I had to use the bathroom. I assured her that the need would not arise. Still skeptical, she fastened the fancy clasp on the belt which was a two-handed job, and left the house.

The ‘need' did arise soon after she left. I knew I could never wait until my friend got there to undo my belt, and my need was growing urgent. With my good right hand I tried desperately to unhook the clasp. No way could I do it with one hand.

By now, I had broken out into a sweat, knowing that my friend would find me in a most undesirable set of circumstances.

"Gracie!" I yelled, knowing that at any moment the worst would happen, "I need.."

Suddenly, before I could finished my sentence, I felt something take my limp left hand, bring it down to my belt and gently pull the two ends apart. I was in too much of a hurry to be surprised or to say thanks. After I was through, and ready to do my belt back up, I realized what had just occurred.

"Thanks, Gracie," I grinned, feeling the certain presence of knowing she was near; then teasingly I added, "Hey, can you do this thing up, too?"

To my utter amazement, as if there was nothing wrong with me, both of my hands reached down and did up my belt!

I know Amazing Gracie is always near, and I thank her and all the other angelic beings who fill my life.
